Makers cabinet

Tools for a lifetime

Bringing inspiration to everyday objects

Makers Cabinet started in 2017 by reimagining the way in which we sharpen a pencil. Two founders, whilst in their first year of Product Design course at Central Saint Martins, launched a crowdfunding campaign raising £25,000 and discovering a small but niche market for innovative drawing and writing tools.

Between the second and third years at university (2018) the team joined Plus X on our hardware accelerator programme. While on the programme, the company rebranded, strategised and most importantly developed its most successful product to date, the Iris drawing compass, a circle drawing tool with an innovative mechanism inspired by camera apertures. Makers Cabinet benefited from full prototyping facilities, links to manufacturers who they use to this day, and a wide network of other exciting brands and businesses who have helped them on their journey.

Outcomes

The team have now a range of 5 flagship products and 20 accessories within a full range of high-quality stationery tools designed to last. The team has raised over £800,000 through crowdfunding and has a highly successful e-commerce site and social media following. The products are stocked in over 50 retailers, including Fortnum and Mason. Makers Cabinet have recently collaborated with The Royal Mint and leading stationery brand Blackwing.

The team has won several industry awards including the Best Desktop Accessory at the London Stationery Show and is about to participate in the Walpole Brands of Tomorrow programme. Makers Cabinet is developing a desk lamp designed in line with the circular economy and has recently been awarded a grant from Innovate UK to develop it. The team are now based in Bethnal Green, London where they have a full prototyping workshop and studio.
